Wellhead Choke Valve

The primary function of a choke valve is to reduce and control fluid pressure and velocity as it moves from the high-pressure wellbore to lower-pressure surface equipment. This prevents equipment damage, manages erosion, and allows operators to fine-tune production rates during drilling, completion, and production phases.

Common types include fixed chokes, which use a set orifice size, and adjustable chokes, which allow operators to vary the flow opening manually or via actuator. Adjustable chokes are further categorized as positive chokes with a needle-and-seat design or multi-orifice designs suited for erosive, high-velocity service.

A choke valve works by forcing fluid through a restricted orifice, creating a pressure drop across the valve. Adjustable models use a movable stem or needle to change the orifice size, letting operators increase or decrease flow and pressure in real time based on well conditions and surface pressure requirements.

In a wellhead assembly, the choke valve manages the transition of high-pressure reservoir fluids into surface flowlines and separators. It protects downstream piping and vessels from pressure surges, controls production rates, and helps manage erosion from sand and abrasive particulates in the produced fluid stream.

Wellhead choke valves are commonly manufactured from forged steel, stainless steel, or hardened alloy bodies with tungsten carbide or ceramic trim components. These materials resist erosion, corrosion, and high-pressure service conditions typical of drilling, completion, and production environments across oil and gas operations.

Selection depends on operating pressure, flow rate, fluid composition, and presence of abrasives like sand. Consider whether a fixed or adjustable choke suits your production profile, required pressure rating, trim material for erosion resistance, and compatibility with existing wellhead and flowline connections.
